Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They are very big but kind and smart.
Elephants use their trunks to grasp food, drink water, and greet one another. They can also make loud horn sounds with their trunks to talk to faraway friends. Their big ears are like giant fans. When it gets too hot, elephants flap their ears to cool down.
Isn’t that clever?
Elephants live in groups called herds; a female elephant called the matriarch leads the group. She’s like the grandma of the group, taking care of everyone and teaching the young ones. Baby elephants, known as calves, are very playful and always stay near their mums. A newborn calf can weigh up to 100 kg!
Elephants are also very caring. They look after each other and comfort their friends when their friends are sad. They remember their friends and family for many years, just like we remember our friends.
Sadly, elephants face big threats. They are in danger because their natural habitats, the forests and grasslands, are disappearing. Some people hurt them, too. They hunt elephants for their tusks or catch them for fun. We can help by caring for our planet and teaching others to love and respect all animals.
