Do you know about bird feathers?

Birds use feathers in many ways, mainly for flying. Birds’ feathers help them glide and swoop. Large feathers on wings are quite strong.

They are perfectly shaped to catch air. This helps birds soar effortlessly.
But that’s not all! Feathers are like birdy jackets. When it’s cold, birds puff up their feathers to trap warm air close to their bodies. It’s a bit like how we snuggle up in our warm jumpers.

Different birds have different feathers.

Some are bright and flashy. Others are simple and plain. Why? Bright feathers attract attention. Think of a peacock’s colourful tail. It’s used to impress others. Plain-coloured feathers can help birds, such as sparrows, blend with trees and bushes. This helps keep them safe from danger.

Have you ever watched ducks in a pond? They’ve got unique feathers.
These feathers repel water. After swimming, ducks give a good shake, with water droplets flying everywhere! The feathers make sure they don’t get too wet and heavy.

From flying high to staying warm, from attracting attention to blending in and even for swimming in ponds, feathers truly are a bird’s best friend!
